Frequently Asked Questions

We've answered the most common questions about our Prague kayak tours to help you prepare for your experience.

Whether it's your first time kayaking or you're wondering what to wear, what to bring, or what you'll see along the way, you'll find the answers below. If you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to contact us—we're always happy to help.

  • Is this kayak tour suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Our Prague kayak tours are designed for beginners as well as experienced paddlers. No previous kayaking experience is required.

Before we launch, your guide will explain the basics of paddling, steering, and safety. Throughout the tour, your guide stays with the group, offers tips and assistance, and can even tow your kayak using a tow rope if you become tired. Most guests are paddling confidently within a few minutes.

  • Do I need previous kayaking experience?

    No.

This experience is specifically designed for first-time kayakers and visitors who simply want to enjoy Prague from the water. Your guide provides instruction before departure and supports you throughout the tour.

  • How difficult is the tour?

    The tour is rated easy.

The Vltava River in central Prague is usually calm with very little current during our early morning departures. We start before the busy boating traffic begins, so you'll enjoy peaceful water and a relaxed pace with plenty of time for photos and sightseeing.

  • Is the tour safe?

    Safety is our highest priority.

    All guests receive:

    Stable touring kayak

    Paddle

    Properly fitted life jacket

    Safety briefing

    Guidance throughout the tour

Your guide is an experienced kayaking guide and licensed Prague tour guide who remains with the group at all times.

  • Can you kayak on the Vltava River in Prague?

Yes. Kayaking on the Vltava River is one of the best ways to experience Prague from a unique perspective. Our guided kayak tours take you past Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Kampa Island and the historic Old Town riverfront.

We paddle during the calm early morning hours before most tourist boats begin operating, making the experience peaceful, safe and suitable even for first-time kayakers.

  • What will we see during the tour?

Depending on the tour you choose, you'll paddle past some of Prague's most famous landmarks, including:

    Charles Bridge

    Prague Castle

    Kampa Island

    Devil's Canal (Čertovka)

    Historic riverfront buildings

Hidden canals and quieter parts of the Vltava River

The sunrise tour also offers beautiful morning colours and reflections before the city becomes busy.

  • Why do the tours start so early?

The early hours are what make this experience special.

The water is calm, the city is peaceful, and Prague's famous landmarks are almost empty. During the sunrise tour, you'll experience the changing colours of the sky and golden light reflecting across the Vltava River- something very few visitors get to see.

  • Is Charles Bridge busy at sunrise?

No. One of the biggest advantages of visiting Charles Bridge at sunrise is the lack of crowds. While the bridge becomes one of Prague's busiest attractions later in the day, early mornings are peaceful and ideal for photography.

From a kayak, you'll enjoy a completely different perspective beneath the bridge, away from the crowds above.

  • What time is sunrise in Prague?

Sunrise changes throughout the year. During summer, sunrise is around 5:00 AM, while in early autumn it's closer to 7:00 AM.

Our Sunrise Kayak Tour departure time changes throughout the season so guests are always on the water for the best sunrise colours rather than after the sun has already risen.

  • Are the kayaks single or double?

We use stable single sit-in kayaks.

Each guest paddles their own kayak, making the experience more enjoyable and allowing everyone to move comfortably through Prague's narrow waterways, including the Devil's Canal.

  • Will my feet get wet?

    No.

We launch directly from a sloped river access where we gently push guests onto the water and help everyone out again at the end of the tour. Under normal conditions, you won't need to step into the river.

  • What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather.

    We recommend:

    Sports or outdoor clothing

    Layers during cooler mornings

A waterproof or windproof jacket if rain is possible

    Comfortable shoes

A spare change of clothes just in case

Even though guests normally stay completely dry, bringing spare clothes is always recommended.

  • What should I bring?

    We recommend bringing:

    Water bottle

    Sunglasses

    Hat or cap

    Sunscreen on sunny days

    Phone

    Camera (at your own risk)

    Avoid bringing unnecessary valuables.

  • Where can I store my belongings?

Small bags can be stored inside the kayak or left securely in our support vehicle during the tour.

Small valuables such as wallets, passports, and keys can also be stored in your guide's waterproof storage.

Most life jackets include a pocket suitable for keeping a phone within easy reach.

  • Can I take photos during the tour?

    Yes.

There are several opportunities to stop and take photos during the tour, and your guide will also capture photos of the group so you can enjoy the experience without constantly reaching for your phone.

If you bring your own camera or phone, you do so at your own risk.

  • What happens if I get tired?

    No problem.

The pace is relaxed, with regular opportunities to rest. If needed, your guide can attach a tow rope and assist you for part or all of the tour.

  • Can non-swimmers join?

Yes, provided you're comfortable being on the water and wear the supplied life jacket throughout the tour. Let your guide know before departure if you're not a confident swimmer so they can provide additional guidance.

  • Can children join?

Children aged 12 years and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult, provided they meet the minimum height and are comfortable sitting in a single kayak.

  • Is there a weight limit?

For comfort and safety, our tours are suitable for most guests. If you weigh over approximately 120 kg, please contact us before booking so we can confirm the best kayak for you.

  • Where do we meet?

Our meeting point is on the Vltava River in central Prague.

Address: Beach Cihelná next to Park Cihelná 118 00, Malá Strana, Prague, Czech Republic

You'll receive detailed meeting instructions and GPS location after booking. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled start time.

  • What happens if I'm late?

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before departure.

Our tours start on time to ensure guests experience the best morning conditions. Because the sunrise and light conditions cannot be delayed, we are unable to wait for late arrivals. Guests who arrive after the scheduled departure time will be treated as a no-show.

  • What happens if it rains?

Light rain usually doesn't affect the experience and can even create beautiful reflections on the river.

If weather conditions become unsafe (such as strong wind, storms, or flooding), we'll contact you to reschedule or discuss available options.

  • Where is the best place to watch sunrise in Prague?

Charles Bridge and the Vltava River offer some of the most spectacular sunrise views in Prague. As the first light reflects off the water, you'll enjoy stunning views of Prague Castle, the historic skyline and the city before it becomes busy.

Our Sunrise Kayak Tour is timed so guests reach the best viewpoints just as the morning colours begin to appear.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Your safety is our highest priority.

Our experienced guide continuously monitors the weather and water conditions. If we determine that conditions are unsafe due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong wind, high water levels, or any other safety concern, we may cancel the tour.

If we cancel the tour, you'll be offered either:

A free reschedule to another available date, or

A full refund if rescheduling isn't possible.

Light rain or cloudy weather does not usually affect the tour and often creates beautiful conditions on the Vltava River. The decision whether a tour operates is made solely by Prague Kayak Experience based on safety considerations.
